World Pyro Olympics 2009 Postponed to January 2010

This year's World Pyro Olympics 2009 is rescheduled on January 2010 due to the incessant rain during its opening night.

The “Greatest Show on Earth” kicked off last November 21st at the Fort Open Grounds, Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City but fell short of a promised spectacle because of the rain. Succeeding fireworks shows have been originally set on November 28, December 5, 12, and 19.

“Due to safety considerations in the firing site, the WPO executive committee decided to reschedule the staging of the WPO in January next year,” said Arriane Dizon, marketing assistant of World Wide Womb for WPO.

In its official press statement, WPO cited that the firing area is unfit for pyrotechnics due to incessant rains.

“The Pyrotechnics launchings have certain international standards to observe. The participating countries agreed to postpone the event,” it said.

The opening showcased colorful displays from Germany and China. It started late due to rains.

In its fourth year, the WPO added a musical component in the competition, or “Pyromusical”, blending music with the bright fireworks display.

Aside from Germany and China, other competing countries this year include Australia, Japan, Canada, Italy, Korea, and USA.

Italy, which made its debut last year in the competition, is the reigning champion of the World Pyro Olympics that began in 2005.

Price War Brews Between Amazon and Wal-Mart

by Brad Stone and Stephanie Rosenbloom, The New York Times
Tuesday, November 24, 2009

Ali had Frazier. Coke has Pepsi. The Yankees have the Red Sox.

Now Wal-Mart, the mightiest retail giant in history, may have met its own worthy adversary: Amazon.com.
In what is emerging as one of the main story lines of the 2009 post-recession shopping season, the two heavyweight retailers are waging an online price war that is spreading through product areas like books, movies, toys and electronics.

The tussle began last month as a relatively trivial but highly public back-and-forth over which company had the lowest prices on the most anticipated new books and DVDs this fall. By last week, it had spread to select video game consoles, mobile phones, even to the humble Easy-Bake Oven, a 45-year-old toy from Hasbro that usually heats up small cakes, not tensions between billion-dollar corporations.

Last Wednesday, Wal-Mart dropped the price of the oven to $17, from $28, as part of its "Black Friday" deals. Later the same day, Amazon cut its price, which had also been $28, to $18.

"It’s not about the prices of books and movies anymore. There is a bigger battle being fought," said Fiona Dias, executive vice president at GSI Commerce, which manages the Web sites of large retailers. "The price-sniping by Wal-Mart is part of a greater strategic plan. They are just not going to cede their business to Amazon."

Retailers are already fighting for every dollar consumers spend this holiday season. Sales are not expected to drop as much as they did last season, but the National Retail Federation, an industry group, predicts that they will decline 1 percent, to $437.6 billion.

Of course, Wal-Mart and Amazon are fundamentally different companies, and for now, at least, Amazon poses little immediate threat to the behemoth from Bentonville, Ark.

Wal-Mart, with $405 billion in sales last year, dominates by offering affordable prices to Middle America in its 4,000 stores. Amazon is a relative schooner to Wal-Mart’s ocean liner, with $20 billion in sales, mostly from affluent urbanites who would rather click with their mouse than push around a cart.

This fight, then, is all about the future. Rapid expansion by each company, as well as profound shifts in the high-tech landscape, now make direct confrontation inevitable. Though online shopping accounts for only around 4 percent of retail sales, that percentage is growing quickly. E-commerce did not suffer as deeply as regular retailing during the economic malaise, and it is recovering faster than in-store shopping. People are also shopping on smartphones and from their HDTVs.

Amazon, based in Seattle, has harnessed all of these trends, and is also behaving more like a traditional retailer. This fall it expanded its white-labeling program, slapping the Amazon brand onto audio and video cables and other products, and introduced same-day shipping in seven cities, trying to replicate the instant gratification of offline shopping.

For rivals both real and putative, Amazon is expanding its slice of the retail pie at what must be an alarming rate. In the third quarter of this year, regular retail sales dipped by about 4 percent and e-commerce over all was flat. But Amazon sales shot up 24 percent, sending its shares soaring.

More important for Wal-Mart, sales in Amazon’s electronics and general merchandise business — which competes directly with much of the selection in Wal-Mart stores — were up 44 percent. Wal-Mart does not break out Web sales, but it has been reported that its online business produces revenue of several billion dollars.

"If you are Wal-Mart, you want to have your proportional piece of this change in consumer behavior," said Scot Wingo, chief executive of ChannelAdvisor, which helps retailers sell online. "You can even paint a scenario where e-commerce one day is 15 percent of all shopping, and that could really start to erode Wal-Mart’s offline business."

That is why many analysts are unsurprised that Wal-Mart executives have placed Amazon squarely in their sights, with public throw-downs in interviews and pointed discounting.

It began last month with what appeared to be a public-relations-oriented competition on book prices, with both companies (along with Target, based in Minneapolis) dropping prices on books like "Under the Dome," by Stephen King, to below $9.

The companies then began jousting over the prices of DVDs. Less visibly, there were isolated skirmishes, some of which also lowered prices in Wal-Mart’s stores. Wal-Mart offered a $15 gift card with a purchase of the new video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 — and Amazon matched soon after.

Wal-Mart and Amazon then both offered the Xbox 360 gaming console for $199 — with a $100 gift card thrown in. Last week, they both began offering the new Palm Pixi phone for around $30 — nearly $175 off the suggested retail price.

Of course, online retailers have always competed on price, monitoring rivals’ sites for changes and adjusting accordingly.

"We’ve grown up in a supercompetitive environment where customers can check prices with one click, and we like it that way," said Craig Berman, an Amazon spokesman.

But rhetoric from Wal-Mart itself has stoked the flames of rivalry. In an interview last week, Raul Vazquez, the president and chief executive of Walmart.com, asserted that the site was growing faster than Amazon’s; suggested that Amazon Prime, a two-day-shipping service that costs $80 a year, was too expensive; and said that it was "only a matter of time" before Wal-Mart dominated Web shopping.

"Our company is based on low prices," Mr. Vazquez said, laying down a challenge. "Even in books, we kept going until we were the low-price leader. And we will do that in every category if we need to."

Friction between the two companies is not entirely new. In the late 1990s, Amazon assembled at least some of its knowledge of retail supply chains by hiring away Wal-Mart employees. Wal-Mart sued, and the two companies settled privately.

In a battle over prices, Wal-Mart is on more familiar turf. With its unmatched size, Wal-Mart has more leverage than anyone to negotiate better terms with suppliers. Offering the lowest price "is in our DNA," Mr. Vazquez said.

Among Amazon’s advantages are a sophisticated distribution network built specifically for Web shopping, the thousands of outside sellers who offer products on Amazon.com, and a recognizable online brand. Amazon’s customers also do not pay sales tax in most states, a crucial advantage that companies like Wal-Mart, and their lobbyists, are trying to eliminate.

Jeffrey P. Bezos, Amazon’s chief executive, is fond of saying that retailing is a big market with room for many winners. But for Ms. Dias, from GSI Commerce, Wal-Mart’s campaign against Amazon is overdue. As an executive at the now-defunct Circuit City chain, and as an adviser to traditional retailers today, she says she has watched many companies overlook the long-term threat posed by Amazon.

"We have to put our foot down and refuse to let them grow more powerful," she said. "I applaud Wal-Mart. It’s about time multichannel retailers stood up and refused to let their business go away."

Smart Communications bagged 3 Awards in Asia Mobile Congress

Smart Communications - the leading wireless provider in the Philippines won three awards at the GSM Association’s Mobile Asia Congress recently held in Hong Kong. It has bagged one-third of the awards, beating the over 100 submissions from mobile phone operators all over the region.

Smart Money’s expanded mobile-based security feature for online purchases won under the Best Mobile Money Service category. Smart Islands Activation Program (IAP) bested competitors under the Mobile Money for the Unbanked Award category while the Axe on Phone campaign, in partnership with Unilever, was awarded Best Mobile Advertising.

“It only shows that the Philippines has an innovative and vibrant telecommunications industry that continues to provide its customers with ground breaking products and services,” gagged Smart President and CEO Napoleon L.Nazareno.

Smart’s winning entries have been automatically shortlisted for the Global Mobile Awards to be held during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain in 2010.

The GSMA represents more than 750 GSM mobile operators as well as 200 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem, including handset makers, software companies, equipment providers, Internet companies and media and entertainment organizations, across 219 countries and territories.

GSMA created the Asia Mobile Awards as a platform to showcase leadership and diversity for mobile content, products and services across Asia. Its judges are composed of a panel of independent analysts, journalists and industry experts.

The winning Smart Island Activations Program benefits grassroots communities, providing remote, underserved island communities with mobile money transfer services. This was piloted in Polillo Island, Quezon province which was cut off from financial services when the only rural bank on the island and the telegraphic transfer office closed shop in 2008.

Working with the RHUDARDA Multi-Purpose Cooperative (RMPC), Smart enabled island residents to send and receive cash, buy airtime and pay for goods and services using mobile phones.

The service will be replicated in 40 other small islands in different parts of the country through Smart’s partnership with SeedFinance, the Mindanao Microfinance Council and other Microfinancing Institutions (MFIs).

On the other hand, Smart Money’s new internet payments security feature allows subscribers to make online purchases even more secure with the help of their cellular phones.

Purchases from MasterCard online retail partners using Smart Money accounts are authorized outside the internet environment via a Smart mobile phone.

The new security feature unlocks the Smart Money account prior to a purchase and then automatically locks it after the transaction. This effectively prevents online fraud and other potential abuses.

On top of all these, the Smart Post-Marketing Waste Management Initiative (tarpaulin recycling) also made it as a finalist under The Green Mobile Award category.

21 dead in Maguindanao hostage crisis

MANILA, Philippines - - Twenty-one people who were among a group of local politicians and journalists abducted in the southern Philippines on Monday have been found dead, the region's military chief said.

"Our Army troopers have reached the area where the vehicles and those held were taken... they were shot by the armed men," Major General Alfredo Cayton said in a radio interview.

"We have recovered 21 bodies. Our men are continuing to scour the area to find the others."
Cayton said he could not yet confirm who carried out the killings.

But Armed Forces spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Romeo Brawner said earlier that gunmen linked to a powerful politician had seized 40 people, including his political rivals and 20 local journalists.
Among those taken were the wife of a mayor in Maguindanao province, Esmael Mangundadatu, his aides and supporters, according to Brawner.

"We have alerted our troops to conduct pursuit operations. This is a law enforcement operation," he told AFP before Cayton reported the 21 deaths.

The journalists were accompanying Mangundadatu's group to a local elections office to file his candidacy for governorship of the predominantly Muslim Maguindanao province in the May 2010 vote when they were seized by the gunmen.

The Mangundadatu clan is known to have a long-running feud with the family of Maguindanao's incumbent governor Andal Ampatuan, who police say is known to control his own private army.
Brawner said there were about 100 gunmen, most of whom were militiamen deputised as government guards by Ampatuan's family.

Brawner said the leader of the militiamen who staged the kidnapping was one of Ampatuan's sons. Ampatuan was not immediately reachable for comment.

Revenge killings and clashes among rival political families are common in Maguindanao and other parts of Mindanao island, where unlicensed firearms proliferate and parts of which are lawless.
Islamic militants on Mindanao have also been waging a separatist rebellion for decades.

Oprah Winfrey to End Her Longest Running Talk Show

Talk Show magnate Oprah Winfrey is set to end her Talk Show "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in 2011.

A spokeswoman for Ms. Winfrey’s production company, Harpo, confirmed that Ms. Winfrey would make an announcement on her show on Friday. The plans were first reported by WABC, the ABC station in New York City.

The reason behind this is that Ms. Winfrey will concentrate on her upcoming cable channel, OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. OWN will have its premiere in January 2011, according to a person with knowledge of Ms. Winfrey’s decision who insisted on anonymity.

Ms. Winfrey, 55, informed her talk show staff of her decision on Thursday afternoon. The television world had expected that she would make a decision about the fate of her program by the end of the year.
Ms. Winfrey told her staffers that she will not transfer the show to cable. She is expected to produce new programs for OWN, and may appear on some of them.

In a statement, CBS Television Distribution said, “We have the greatest respect for Oprah and wish her nothing but the best in her future endeavors. We know that anything she turns her hand to will be a great success. We look forward to working with her for the next several years, and hopefully afterwards as well.”

OWN is a joint venture between her production company and Discovery Communications. Getting the channel off the ground has proved challenging amid management turnover and an uncertain advertising climate.

The timeline for OWN will theoretically give Ms. Winfrey about nine months to promote her cable channel on her existing show.

Sometimes called the Queen of Talk, Forbes estimates Ms. Winfrey’s net worth to be $2.7 billion. “The Oprah Winfrey Show” is the most successful talk show in syndication, reaching about seven million viewers a day. It has been vital to the success of ABC, whose local station group has been the primary home of the show since it started in syndication in 1986.
